The weather turned uncharacteristically cold on us this weekend. I had just stowed away my heavy jacket in my cedar closet until next winter, or so I thought. I had to go get it back out again to deal with the extremely chilly temperatures and wind over the weekend.

We went into Houston on Saturday to run some errands. We also attended mass at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart which is about to celebrate its 1 year anniversary. It is huge and still brand new. It was nice in many ways but I much prefer the older style cathedrals and smaller churches like the one we attend each week.

Sunday was spent at home. I cooked a huge German dinner of jaeger schnitzel, hot german potato salad, and red cabbage.

I just realized that it has been a solid week since my last post. I have been busy busy and kept putting off posting on my blog. In addition to my full-time job, I have also been working on my next book and helping with various school and extracurricular activities for my daughter. She is in Girl Scouts and this was the final week of cookie sales for the year. In fact, we spent two hours this afternoon helping at a cookie booth in front of the local WalMart. We have now sold out on all cookies for our troop. Thank goodness. Perhaps next year I will just make a monetary donation and not worry with the immense amount of work involved in Girl Scout cookie sales. And I got off easier since I wasn't even the Cookie Mom.

Houston Zoo

A view of the reflecting pool at the zoo this morning:

We braved the spring break crowds and visited the Houston Zoo today. Since I am such a stickler for punctuality, we left home early and got to the zoo just before the gates opened for the day. We got a great parking spot near the front and escaped most of the crowds. By the time we had walked the entire zoo which included all the exhibits, petted the goats in the kids area, admired the herd of giraffes, and listened to the lion roar, the crowds were getting fierce and we were ready to leave.

We had lunch at Black Walnut Cafe in the Rice Village. We had intended to go to Ruggles Grill but there were no available tables and I was starving. We ate the fish tacos at Black Walnut which were fairly good but not the ... Read More »

On Saturday we drove to Angleton to the Brazoria County Historical Society annual book sale. It was the last day of the sale and they were selling boxes of books for $10 per box. Just fill a box with any assortment of books and pay the $10!

The sheer number of books was overwhelming. Thousands of books that had been donated over the course of the past year. Some books were really old and some were almost new. I happened across this small collection of books about civil war battlefields. The books were published and printed by the National Park Service between 1954 and 1960.

I was especially interested in the book about Shiloh. I grew up very near Shiloh and I've been there quite a few times to visit the military park along the banks of the Tennessee river. As a child in the South, I would hear my grandparents and their gen ... Read More »

I've been tagged for a meme so here it is:

1. What is your occupation right now? CFO

2. What color are your socks right now? Not wearing any.

3. What are you listening to right now? The theme song from Gilligan's Island is wafting through from the next room where my daughter is watching her dvd's of all three seasons.

4. Last person you spoke to on the phone: the mother of my daughter's best friend. We were making arrangements to keep the little monsters occupied during the upcoming spring break week.

5. How old are you today? 39.701319863

Yes indeed. This is a Ski Jump Toilet. Look closely at the great detail of this bathroom cubicle in Japan. I found this over at neatorama.com which is one of those ultimate time-wasting sites that grabs your interest and keeps you there for days.

Plumbing

Yes, I know this post is about boring old plumbing issues at our house but bear with me. I am having trouble thinking of a topic for today's blog post.

A few months ago we noticed a suspicious stain on the kitchen ceiling above the breakfast table. It did not spread or appear worse so we kept putting off getting something done about it. You know how it is, there is only so much time to take care of things and we'd all rather be pulling our fingernails out or poking our eyes with sharp sticks rather than doing home maintenance.

Alas, the ceiling spot suddenly worsened over the weekend so Monday Dan ripped a big hole in the ceiling sheetrock to inspect it. Turns out that the wax seal along the bottom of the master bathroom toilet upstairs had failed and begun leaking.

We had a house full of relatives visiting for a week since it was Toot's First Communion at church on Saturday. ... Read More »

My Day

My daughter came home from school today and informed me that her teacher had them "completely gut out their desks." What the....? What kind of way is that to tell second graders to clean out their desks? Is that deer hunter terminology? And what really scares me about the whole situation is that Toot brought all the unnecessary contents of her desk home in her backpack. I am fearful to even open the backpack.

My in-laws are visiting and my mother-in-law is bemoaning the fact that her local PBS station has ceased having the Lawrence Welk Show on Saturday nights. I don't believe I need to say much more about this.

But it is pleasant to have the in-laws visiting. FIL stays busy with home improvement projects around our house and I have extra people to challenge to Scrabble games. My brother arrives tomorrow evening via Amtrak. And my mom and her signifcant other will also arrive tomorrow.
